Almost over in Mongolia.
By Robert Sole | May 30, 2008
Back on the train. This is better. Now we have drunk Mongolian smugglers pissed drunk (8:00 am) and belligerent with each other. Should prove to be interesting for the next 24 hours.
Overall Mongolia was great. I am glad that I got off the train for a few days and did some great hiking and the overnight stay in the Ger.
I should be passing through the Gobi desert in a few hours and apparently I will get to see really good views of the Great Wall as I enter China.
The scenery through Mongolia was interesting especially seeing parts of the Gobi Desert. The dust from the desert filled the train making it tough to breath at times. The trip through China had great scenery with a lot of mountains, rivers and streams
I basically have the touristy things planned for Peking. I always to see the Forbidden City . I am not sure where I will go after Beijing. I need to be in Shanghais to catch a flight but I might try to get to a village before then.
Changing of the bogeys
The Chinese tracks have a different gage than the Russian and Mongolian tracks so they have to change the wheels (bogeys) before we continue our journey. They elevate the carriages and change all of them in about 2 hours. It is a lot of banging, clanging and shunting to get all of the cars lined up again. Now I am glad that I don’t drink coffee for I would have surely spilled it.
I thought we were permitted to leave the carriage but no go. That is ok as I was chatting to a charming Irish woman for most of the time.
I just got my passport back from the efficient Chinese custom official and I feel like a little kid being scolded. He told Alma (charming Irish woman) and me to go back to our cabins. But he did say please.
