Beautiful Vienna

By Tracy Wagner | August 29, 2008

Vienna has so many beautiful old buildings… in fact I’m sensing some repetition here… all of Europe seems to have the wonderful old buildings but Vienna seems to have a lot! As soon as we got there we joined up on a night bike tour which proved to be a wonderful idea. Vienna is a big city and we saw a lot that night not to mention being amazed at its beauty when lit up at night. I have loved the biking - such a cool way to see a city and easy in Europe with bike lanes on every street. Now I want to get into bike riding again.

The next day we wandered the streets some more after sitting on the ‘ring road’ tram which was also a nice way to see the city. They have a very impressive government building and town hall which is set up through summer to play outdoor opera and classical movies, lovely atmosphere. We walked through the Rose gardens and ate the famous Sacher Torte chocolate cake. The first cathedral in Europe that I’ve not been happy about was the Stephansdom in Vienna cos of it’s highly naf modern tiled roof. It looked like bright coloured lego pieces which just looked ridiculous against the old gothic style façade. What were they thinking?

We looked at the Hundtertwasser house (a funky architect that supports many environmental issues so his buildings not only look awesome but have a good impact on the environment)

That night the plan was to go on another pub crawl. Now some of you will not believe it but I actually chose to stay home instead cos I was addicted to my Lance Armstrong book! I know, I know but have you read it?!

We went on a day wine tour an hour out of Vienna and into the gorgeous countryside. I felt so lucky and kind of had to pinch myself to realise where I was - bike riding through the Austrian countryside, winding our way through the vineyards and stopping to try some wine, as well as homemade jams, mustards, liquors and chocolate. We climbed a bloody steep hill to Richard the Lionheart’s den and got great views. We were supposed to swim in the Danube River and play beach volleyball after our barbeque lunch but it poured down with rain instead - gutted! We got drenched on our ride back but I was just laughing the whole way, pretty surreal feeling, caught in a thunderstorm while cycling through Austria’s vineyards! How about it?!

Our tour guide gave us more wine on our train ride back and then suggested we join him for one drink at the hostel bar… yea right… many cocktails later me and the girls were on a mission to find the jandal thief, making fools of ourselves in a kebab shop and other stupid drunken shenanigans. Hilarious fun!
