Northern Region Suffers Due to Tropical Storm Hanna
The province of Guanacaste is under red alert due to the massive rains caused by the Tropical Storm Hanna. The National Institute of Meteorology (IMN) had alerted residents to take extra precaution due to the numerous amounts of rivers in the area and at which 21 shelters were prepared.
As of last night, at least 568 people from the towns of Filadelfia, Santa Cruz, Liberia, Cañas and La Cruz required shelter due to the flooding of 14 rivers. The Ministry of Transportation announced that 12 bridges in region remain under water as well as that several roads have been completely destroyed.
In Bocas de Nosara, a representative for the National Emergency Commission announced that for the first time in many years, the Nosara River violently overflowed flooding the entire town. The floodin completely detached the Nosara landing strip from the ground and caused the beveling of Santa Marta Bridge.
Since Guanacaste is Costa Rica’s most popular tourist destination, visitors must take extra precaution and plan alternate routes should this region be within their itinerary during the these days.
The road between Liberia and Santa Cruz suffered serious damage due to extensive flooding. As for the bridge over the Capulin River, authorities are closely watching the structure due to trees in the river that may further damage the bridge. The bridge over the Carrizal River has been weakened due to a problem with one of its bastions. In addition, the road that communicates Nicoya with Nosara suffered a landslide that has affected normal transit.
The province of Puntarenas has also been included within the red alert due to the town of Arancibia in Miramar being cut off due to a landslide which destroyed 200 meters of road as well as the town’s water supply.
