Last days in Japan and to China.

By Jill Ludwig | July 5, 2008

My last couple days in Japan were certainly memorable. We were all pretty tired when we all got back to Tokyo. Most of the group wanted to go meet Andrei Anderson at the Canadian Embassy, but I was too exhausted to care. I had met him last year and I got my picture taken with him then and that was good enough for me. I went out to a nice little sushi restaurant with a couple of other people, and then went to bed for about 12 hours.

The next day I met up with my friend Yakama, who was one of my students I showed around Toronto a couple years ago. He showed me around, took me to the Tokyo tower and his University. That night, we all went out for our last big dinner together, and went out to a club. This was probably not the smartest idea but it was a lot of fun. I did end up paying for a $30 cab ride back to my hostel which was really not cool.

I was supposed to climb Mt. Fuji with a bunch of other people but we were all a little too lethargic to care, so Saturday was a total write-off. We ended up going out for more sushi and French crepes. I’m still not sure why the food is so good in Japan…I think it is because they have a tonne of foreigners come in and make the Western food.

While we missed Mt. Fuji on Saturday, we made up for it on Sunday. Jeffrey, Mark, Christopher, and I all went to Nikko, which is home to a World Heritage site. The scenery was absolutely stunning, and the temples, shrines, and mausoleums we went into were phenomenal. This was truly the stereotypical ancient Japan that I had grown to know in textbooks when I was younger. The trees were magnificent, the water crystal clear…it really couldn’t have been a nicer day. Oh, and we went to the temple with the three famous monkeys: hear no evil, speak no evil, see no evil. Maybe if I’m feeling adventurous I’ll try and post the pictures on here.

The rest of my time in Japan was pretty unexciting. I slept a lot in my hostel, and ate more good, cheap food where I could find it. I met up with everyone who was heading back to Toronto in the airport, and made my way to Beijing. This is where the fun really begins.
