Metropolitan Sabana Park in San Jose, Costa Rica

La Sabana Park

The Centro Colon building where our offices our located, overlooks the famous Sabana Metropolitan Park.

All the way back in 1783, catholic priest Father Manuel Antonio Chapuí de Torres, donated the land with the condition that this land was to be used for the recreation and well being of all Costa Ricans.

Today, a great part of this land is the Sabana Metropolitan Park.  A walk among this park will take you through small forest areas, a man made lake, the National Stadium as well as the National Gymnasium and through many sports fields such as soccer, baseball and squash.

However, back in 1937, due to the fast rise of civil aviation, the Costa Rican government decided to build the Sabana International Airport in order to meet flight demands.  The Sabana Airport was inaugurated April 7, 1940 and was active until 1958 when the Juan Santamaría International airport was built.  The Juan Santamaría Airport is still active today.

The building which once served as the Sabana’s airport terminal is today the Museum of Costa Rican Art.  This museum was created back in 1977 with the purpose of preserving and rescuing Costa Rican Art.

La Sabana Park is also home to the Maria del Milagro Paris swimming pool where hundreds of future athletes go and train every day.

During weekdays, you can spot the always dedicated joggers getting their mid-day exercise as well as busy workers taking a shortcut through the park.

The park comes alive during the weekends.  Bright and early you will be able to participate in the free aerobic classes, play a game or two of soccer, have the kids enjoy a pony ride, set up a nice picnic or just sit under a tree and relax.
