Snag a First Class Toiletry Kit.
By KataStrul | November 30, 2007
Most airlines hand out very nice toiletry kits to their first class and business class passengers on international flights. These usually include a travel toothbrush and toothpaste, mouthwash, shaving cream, razor, comb, lotion, socks, sleeping masks, and earplugs, among other things.
I received a first class kit ten years ago when I was bumped from economy to business on my first transatlantic flight (they were out of business class kits) and it served as my toiletry bag for eight years (it was real leather!) Another kit I received from KLM was a miniature vinyl drop bag, and my husband used it for several years. I use it now for shorter trips. Not all passengers who receive the kits use them, and most don’t use everything in them.
If you’re flying economy, and exit through the business or first class cabin, snag one of these left-behind kits if you see one (the airlines cannot reuse them). You may have to ’sanitize’ the toothbrush or earplugs in the microwave or in boiling water, but they and other items will be perfect to add to your travel comfort/toiletry kit.
You can then travel with some first class amenities, even if you’re stuck in steerage. I’m convinced that the (previously unused) earplugs I snagged on a recent United flight preserved my sanity on the 9-hour return transatlantic trip from Paris to Chicago with 30 hyper talkative French teenagers on board (some kind of a school trip, I think).
