The park is located by the southern Pacific coast, between the mouth of Higuerón Morete river and Point Piñas, District of Ballena Bay, Cantón of Osa, Province of Puntarenas. The marine limit is an imaginary line that surrounds the reefs formed by the outer area of Uvita Point, Ballena Island, Tres Hermanas, and its surroundings, originated at the mouth of Higuerón Morete river and ending at Point Piñas. The Park has a surface of 5.375 marine hectares and 110 terrestrial hectares. It was created on February 6, 1989 and was the first Marine National Park in Latin America. This protected area preserves important habitats such as sandy beaches, rocky beaches, estuaries, mangroves, cliffs, islands, rocky shoals, Point Uvita and coral reefs, all of them important environments for the reproduction of the marine biodiversity. |
